The verbs of the third group are called irregular verbs because they don’t follow the same conjugation as the verbs of the first and the second groups. Their conjugation varies according to their roots. In this lesson, we will study the verbs ending in “eindre”, “tendre”, “prendre”, and “crire”.

Verbs ending in “eindre”

To conjugate the verbs ending in “eindre” into the imperfect tense, we remove “ndre” and replace it with “gnais, gnais, gnait, gnions, gniez, gnaient”. All the verbs ending in “eindre” conjugate like the verb “peindre”.

The verbs conjugating like “peindre’ are: astreindre, atteindre, ceindre, dépeindre, déteindre, enfreindre, éteindre, feindre, geindre, repeindre, restreindre

Mon père n’était pas un artiste peintre. Pourtant il peignait tout le temps.
My father was not an artist; yet, he painted all the time.

Remember: Don’t confuse the verb “peindre” with the verb “peigner”. Although they have the same conjugation in the imperfect tense, they have different meanings.

Nous avions très peur car la rivière près de notre maison atteignait des niveaux alarmants.
We were very scared because the river next to our house was reaching dangerous levels.

À chaque fois que j’allais les voir, ils éteignaient la lumière pour me donner l’impression qu’ils n'étaient pas là.
Each time I went to see them, they shut off the light to give me the impression that they were not there.

Pour faire plaisir à mon père, ma belle-mère et ma demi-soeur feignaient toujours d’être contentes de me voir.
To make my father happy, my step-mother and my step-sister always pretended to be happy to see me.

Verbs ending in “tendre”

To conjugate the verbs ending in “tendre” into the imperfect tense, we remove “re” and replace it with “ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient”. All the verbs ending in “tendre” conjugate like the verb “tendre”.

The verbs conjugating like “tendre” are attendre, détendre, distendre, entendre, étendre, prétendre, sous-entendre.

. Quand ta propre fille était aux urgences, toi tu te détendais sur une plage à Rio de Janeiro.
When your own daughter was in the emergency room, you were relaxing on the beach in Rio de Janeiro.

Est-ce que vous nous entendiez quand nous nous disputions la nuit ?
Did you hear us when we were arguing at night?

Nous vous tendions toujours les bras, mais vous refusiez toujours notre aide.
We always offered you our help, but you never wanted it.

Verbs ending in “prendre”

To conjugate the verbs ending in “prendre” into the imperfect tense, we remove “dre” and replace it with “ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient”. All the verbs ending in “prendre” conjugate like the verb “prendre”.

The verbs conjugating like “prendre” are apprendre, comprendre, entreprendre, s’éprendre, se méprendre, reprendre, surprendre, etc.

Ils leur apprenaient comment se battre.
They taught them how to fight.

Il reprenait son travail toujours en début d’été.
He always resumed work at the beginning of the summer.

Verbs ending in “crire”

To conjugate the verbs ending in “crire” into the imperfect tense, we remove “re” at the end of the verb and replace it with “vais, vais, vait, vions, viez, vaient”. All the verbs ending in “crire” conjugate like the verb “écrire”.

The verbs conjugating like “écrire” are circonscrire, décrire, inscrire, prescrire, proscrire, réécrire, transcrire, souscrire, etc…

Mon grand-père nous décrivait son pays natal comme un pays vaste avec plein d’arbres fruitiers.
My grand father described his native land as a vast country with lots of fruit-trees.

Je n’étais jamais satisfaite de mes dissertations. Je les réécrivais toujours au moins deux ou trois fois avant de les remettre à mon prof.
I was never happy with my essays. I always rewrote them at least twice or three times before handing them to my teacher.
