There are four main verb moods (modes de temps) in French: the indicative, the subjunctive, the conditional, and the imperative. In this chapter, we will study the conditional. There are two tenses that use the conditional mood: the present conditional and the past conditional.

First, we will study the present conditional, its form and its use. In the first part, we will go through the form of the verbs. In this lesson, we will start covr the verbs of the 1st and 2nd group.

Verbs of the First Group

The verbs of the first group all end in “er” in the infinitive form. They are called regular because they all follow the same conjugation rule except for a few verbs. Note that even though the verb “aller” ends in “er”, it does not belong to the verbs of the first group; it belongs to the third group.

To conjugate the verbs of the first group into the present conditional, we simply add: ais, ait, ions, iez and aient to the verbs in the infinitive depending on which person is the subject. Let’s conjugate the verb “marcher” in the present conditional.

Conjugation of the verb marcher:

Je marcherais
Tu marcherais
Il marcherait
Nous marcherions
Vous marcheriez
Ils marcheraient

For example:

Si j’avais plus d’énergie, je marcherais plus vite.
If I had more energy, I would walk faster.

Let’s conjugate another verb. Conjugation of the verb aimer:

J'aimerais
Tuaimerais
Ilaimerait
Nousaimerions
Vousaimeriez
Ilsaimeraient

For example:

Elles aimeraient bien aller avec vous.
They would love to go with you.

Exception: The verbs ending in “oyer” or “uyer” such as envoyer, essuyer, and nettoyer are verbs of the first group, but they don’t follow the same rule as the other verbs when they are conjugated into the present conditional.

Conjugation of the verb envoyer:

J' enverrais
Tu enverrais
Il enverrait
Nous enverrions
Vous enverriez
Ils enverraient

Conjugation of the verb essuyer:

J' essuierais
Tu essuierais
Il essuierait
Nous essuierions
Vous essuieriez
Ils essuieraient

Conjugation of the verb nettoyer:

Je nettoierais
Tu nettoierais
Il nettoierait
Nous nettoierions
Vous nettoieriez
Ils nettoieraient

Verbs of the Second Group

The verbs of the second group all end in “ir”. Some form their present participle with "ant" and some with “issant”. They are considered regular verbs because they all have the same conjugation.

To conjugate the verbs of the second group in the present conditional we simply add: ais, ait, ions, iez, and aient to the verbs in the infinitive depending on which person is the subject. Let’s conjugate the verb “finir” to the present conditional.

Conjugation of the verb finir:

Je finirais
Tu finirais
Il finirait
Nous finirions
Vous finiriez
Ils finiraient

For example:

Vous avez dit que vous finiriez votre travail à 22h.
You said that you would finish your work at 10pm.

Let’s conjugate another verb. Conjugation of the verb choisir :

Je choisirais
Tu choisirais
Il choisirait
Nous choisirions
Vous choisiriez
Ils choisiraient

For example:

À ta place, je choisirais la voiture grise.
If I were you, I’d choose the silver car.
