The verbs of the third group are called irregular verbs because they don’t follow the same conjugation as the verbs of the first and the second groups. Their conjugation varies according to their roots. In this lesson we will study the verbs with the roots: battre, tenir, courir, and cueillir.

Verbs with the root “battre

To conjugate the verbs with the root “battre” into the imperfect tense, we remove the “re” and replace it with: ais, ait, ions, iez or aient depending on the persons.

Other verbs that conjugate like “battre” are abattre, combattre, débattre, rabattre, etc...

Examples:

Quand j’étais petite, mon père me battait souvent quand je ne lui obéissais pas.
When I was little, my father often beat me when I didn’t obey him.

Nous étions devenus amis car nous combattions le même ennemi : la pauvreté.
We became friends because we fought the same enemy: poverty.

Quand tu discutais avec ton frère, vous débattiez souvent sur des questions politiques.
When you talked with your brother, you often discussed political issues.

Notre voisin était sans gêne. Tous les matins pendant que tout le monde dormait, il ouvrait le capot de sa voiture et le rabattait si fort qu’il réveillait tout le monde.
Our neighbor was an inconsiderate person. Every morning, when everybody was asleep, he would open his car hood and slam it shut so loudly that he woke everybody up.

Les chasseurs d'éléphants étaient impitoyables. Ils abattaient même des éléphanteaux.
The elephant hunters were pitiless. They even slaughtered elephant calves.

Verbs with the root “tenir

To conjugate the verbs with the root “tenir” into the imperfect tense, we drop “ir” and replace it with: ais, ait, ions, iez or aient depending on the persons.

Other verbs that conjugate like “tenir” are s’abstenir, appartenir, détenir, entretenir, maintenir, obtenir, retenir, soutenir, etc...

Les pays du nord s’abstenaient toujours de voter.
The northern countries always abstained from voting.

Nous ne savions pas que nous détenions le plus grand secret de la famille royale.
We didn’t know that we held the biggest secret of the royal family.

Quand Sophie vivait dans cette maison, elle l’entretenait avec soin.
When Sophie lived in this house, she took good care of it.

Au lycée, j’obtenais toujours les meilleures notes en histoire.
In high school, I always obtained the best grades in history.

The verbs with the root “courir

To conjugate the verbs with the root “courir” into the imperfect tense, we drop “ir” and replace it with “ais, ait, ions, iez or aient” depending on the persons.
Other verbs that conjugate like “courir” are accourir, concourir, encourir, parcourir, recourir, secourir.

J’adorais cette petite fille. À chaque fois que je venais voir sa mère, elle accourait vers moi les bras ouverts.
I loved that little girl. Every time I went to see her mom, she ran up to me with open arms.

Avant que je ne tombe malade, je courais souvent avec ma femme. Nous parcourions toute la ville en courant.
Before I got sick, I often ran with my wife. We ran all over town.

Vous saviez que vous encouriez un grand danger en menaçant cet homme.
You knew that you took a big risk by threatening this man.

To conjugate the verbs with the root “cueillir”, you remove “ir” and replace it with: ais, ais, ait, ions, iez or aient depending on the person.

Verbs that conjugate like “cueillir” are accueillir, recueillir

Quand j’allais à la campagne chez ma grand-mère, je cueillais les plus beaux coquelicots que je trouvais et les offrais à ma grand-mère.
When I went to the countryside at my grandmother’s, I used to pick up the most beautiful poppies I could find and offered them to my grandmother.

Madame Rousselle avait beaucoup de classe. Elle accueillait toujours ses invités avec grâce.
Madame Rousselle was a classy lady. She always welcomed her guests with gracefulness.

Quand nous faisions la collecte des signatures, mon ami Hugo recueillait toujours le plus grand nombre de signatures.
When we collected signatures, my friend Hugo always collected the biggest number of signatures.
