The Prepositional phrases just like prepositions link words in a sentence. Prepositional phrases are composed of two or more words. The words can be: nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs or prepositions. We will discuss the most common prepositional phrases.

In this lesson we will study the following prepositional phrases: au prix de, autour de, aux dépends de, aux environs de, dans le but de.

au prix de

“au prix de” has many meanings in English. It can mean “ through”, “at the cost of” , “with”, or “for”. It can also express the cost of something. It is generally followed with a noun or a noun phrase.

For example:

Le supermarché du centre-ville vend de la viande de boeuf au prix de 2 euros le kilo.
The supermarket downtown sells beef meat for 2 euros a kilo.

Un accord de cessez-le-feu a été obtenu au prix de longues négociations.
A ceasefire agreement was reached through long negotiations.

Ils ont le droit de vouloir économiser de l’argent mais cela ne doit pas se faire au prix de la sécurité des passagers.
They have the right to save money, but this shouldn’t be done at the expense of the passengers safety.

La relance économique se fait au prix d’immenses sacrifices.
The boost of the economy comes with huge sacrifices.

autour de

“autour de” means “around” or “about”. It is used to express physical location, as well as figurative location. It also expresses approximative cost, rate, number etc... It is always followed with a noun or a noun phrase.

For example:

C’est Copernic qui a découvert que la terre tournait autour du soleil.
It’s Copernicus who discovered that the Earth revolved around the sun.

Nous avons tout fait pour empêcher que la conversation tourne autour de l’argent.
We did everything to prevent the conversation from revolving around money.

Viens chez moi nous en parlerons autour d’un café.
Come to my house, we’ll have some coffee and talk about it.

Tu trouveras des hôtels pas très chers, autour de 60 euros la nuit.
You will find inexpensive hotels, around 60 euros a night.

aux dépens de

“aux dépens de” means “at the expense of”. It is always followed with a noun or a noun phrase. We also say: à mes dépens, à ses dépens, à nos dépens etc....

For example:

La construction des nouvelles infrastructures sportives se fera aux dépens de la classe moyenne qui devra payer plus d’impôts l’année prochaine.
The construction of the new sport facilities will be done at the expense of the middle class which will have to pay more taxes next year.

Je veux bien qu’il réussisse sa vie mais je ne veux pas que cela soit fait à mes dépens.
I would like him to succeed in his life, but I don’t want him to do that at my expense.

Dans la célèbre fable de la Fontaine “Le Corbeau et le Renard”, le renard dit:
« Apprenez que tout flatteur vit aux dépens de celui qui l’écoute ».
In one of Fontaine’s famous fables “The Fox and the Raven”, the fox says:
“Learn that every flatterer

aux environs de

“aux environs de” means “around”, “approximatively”, or “about”. It expresses an approximate time, rate, amount, place or number. It’s always followed with a noun or a noun phrase.

For example:

Je vous vois dans mon bureau aux environs de 15h.
I will see you at my desk around 3pm.

Tu peux acheter un bel appartement aux environs de cent mille euros.
You can get a nice condo around a hundred thousands euros.

Il a acheté une maison aux environs de Rouen.
He bought a house near Rouen.

Dans le but de

“dans le but de” expresses objective or aim. It means “with the intention of” or “in order to”. It can also mean “in the hope of” in certain contexts. It is always followed by a verb in the infinitive or an infinitive phrase.

For example:

Je suis venue aujourd’hui dans le but de vous convaincre de signer cette pétition en faveur de la création d’une commission d’enquête.
I came today in the hope of convincing you to sign this petition in favor of the creation of an investigating committee.

Nous avons créé de nouvelles lignes téléphoniques dans le but d’améliorer le service clientèle.
We created new phone lines in order to improve our customer service.

Il a fait tout ça dans le but de m’écarter de la compagnie.
He did all that in order to keep me away from the company.
