The verbs of the third group are called irregular verbs because they don’t follow the same conjugation as the verbs of the first and the second groups. Their conjugation varies according to their roots. In this lesson we will study the verbs with the roots: mettre, venir, recevoir and the verbs conjugating like “rendre”:

Verbs with the root “mettre”

To conjugate the verbs with the root “mettre” into the imperfect tense, we remove the “re” and replace it with “ais, ait, ions, iez or aient” depending on the persons:

Tu	mettais
Il /elle/ on	mettait
Nous	mettions
Vous	mettiez
Ils/elles	mettaient

All the verbs below conjugate like “mettre”: admettre, commettre, compromettre, émettre, permettre, soumettre, transmettre.

Examples:

Mon père n’admettait jamais qu’il avait tort.
My father never admitted that he was wrong.

Jour après jour, ces soldats commettaient des crimes horribles et personne n’osait les défier.
Day after day, these soldiers committed horrible crimes and nobody dared defying them.

Il savait bien qu’il compromettait l’avenir de la compagnie en annulant le contrat.
He knew that he was compromising the future of the company by canceling the contract.

La machine émettait des sons bizarres.
The machine produced weird sounds.

Ma maman ne me permettait jamais de sortir toute seule.
My mother never allowed me to go out alone.

Verbs with the root “venir”

To conjugate the verbs with the root “venir” into the imperfect tense, we remove the “ir” and replace it with “ais, ait, ions, iez or aient” depending on the persons:

My brother became increasingly bitter as time went on.

Je ne sais pas comment tu faisais mais tu parvenais toujours à me battre au jeu d’échecs.
I don’t know how you did, but you always managed to beat me in chess.

Avant elles me prévenaient avant de venir me voir ; maintenant elles viennent toujours par surprise.
Before, they used to warn me before coming to see me; now they always come by surprise.

L’odeur provenait de la cave.
The smell came from the cellar.

Ma femme et moi subvenions souvent aux besoins de nos voisins.
My wife and I often provided for our neighbors.

Ah oui, je me souviens bien de vous ! Vous veniez toujours en retard !
Oh yes, I remember you! You always came late!

Verbs with the root “cevoir”

To conjugate the verbs conjugating like “recevoir” into the imperfect tense, we remove the “oir” and replace it with” ais, ait, ions, iez or aient depending on the persons.

All the verbs below conjugate like “recevoir”:

apercevoir, concevoir, décevoir, percevoir.

To conjugate the verbs conjugating like “rendre” into the imperfect tense, we remove the “re” and replace it with” ais, ait, ions, iez or aient depending on the persons:
